The purpose of this post is to document players' opinion about the proposal:

Both teams should be allowed to place divisions into whatever allied country they please.

As shocko is not making it, I logged into the save and setup his stuff to best function without him present. I saved this without any time passing. I believe that will not cause any problems.
When players cannot make it, this "logging into the save and setting up his stuff to best function without any time passing" can be a partial solution to having missing player(s).

Unless someone objects, I'd suggest that we adopt this fiddling-with-the-save as a way to help with missing players.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you put very strict structures around this.

I pivot on our well intentioned "pre-session" set up time. While we set out to make something really effective, it did string out the pre-session set up. Players were joining in at all times and what could have been 30+ minutes of set up time, actually turned into maybe 10-12 minutes of actual in-game time of set up with the rest of the time in lobby and load screens.

Hotjoining back and forth into player spots comes at the cost of time and overhead to the pre-session set up.

Additionally Greyhound has been amazing patient and attentive in his role as game host, always showing early and staying late. We cannot expect that level of support from every host in the future.

Yes, thanks to Greyhound for hosting the games.

He has a been a superb gamemaster.

I especially appreciate the way that he shows up early.

(We missed him on 12 May)

Took me a few moments to understand that. It has all the appearance of a tried and true joke, but I think it is the first time I've heard that one! :)

Rules for absences?

There may be additional ways and rules to handle player absences in a multi-session game. What methods can you think of?

Here are some possible solutions.
  • Recruit a substitute. In the current game, there will be at least 2 players absent in the next session. The absent player could reach out to other HoI4 players and ask them to fill in for them. A player who was going to be absent could -- for example -- ask SkapeGoat, Altaris, Sir Garnet,UMMD's brother-in-law, Alex Brunius to play their nation. If the absent player cannot locate a substitute, then the Faction leaders (or their designated recruiters) could work to recruit another player.
  • Find a different start time or day that would allow the absent player to participate. If a player isn't available to play during certain hours, one approach might be to start the game a few hours earlier or later. Or even play that session on a different day. Saturday. Monday. Thursday.
  • Dualboxing. At least 3 players have the ability to dual box HoI4. This approach is a variant of "finding a substitute". RichardNixon listed conditions that makes dual-boxing more practical.
  • Housekeeping between games In the week before the scheduled session, the absent-player-to-be or faction leader (or designated player) loads the save and makes the appropriate adjustments to the absent player's nation . These adjustments could be construction or research queues, division recruitment, political point purchases, etc. After the adjustments are made, the save-game file is returned to the game-master. These adjustments are done days before the gaming session.

    That makes good sense.
  • Allow the A.I. to play the absent player's nation.
  • Postpone the game to the next scheduled session

What methods can you think of to handle a player's absence?

To implement any of these or future suggestions, it would be useful to stipulate any associated rules.

Keep it simple...

Agreed. I've regretted being in favor of dual boxing ever since we allowed it one time. This should, imo, only be used in emergency cases, if at all.

What do you dislike of it ?

I like that it disables the AI on that contry, and makes it more appealing for the player to come back the following week.

Allow Turkey diplomatic pressure.

A reason to allow nations to diplomatically pressure Turkey is given the nature of the game.

This is a grand strategy game. The full panoply of national power should be available to each player.

Diplomacy is an important part of national power.

Modding Turkey to make it (very) resistant to being swayed makes sense, given that Turkey's historical response to WW2 was, "Meh. You guys go have fun. We think we'll sit this out."

But if a faction or even an individual nation wants to expend resources to bring Turkey onto their side, I think it should be allowed.

Bringing Turkey into one's faction incurs opportunity costs, especially in the early game.

The game mechanics allow nations to counter efforts to convert Turkey.

And when diplomacy fails...

Well, that is why they call this a "wargame".

:)

I'm also in favor of allowing dual boxing.
